  • The BetterWay ALT is a fingertip blood test that measures alanine aminotransferase (detects liver damage).

ALT (alanine aminotransferase) is an enzyme found in the liver that helps the body process amino acids. When liver cells are damaged, they release ALT into the blood, potentially in high concentrations. This test measures the amount of ALT in the blood. It is commonly used to help detect liver damage.

This test is also known as: alanine aminotransferase, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), GPT or alanine transaminase.
    Understanding your results
You will receive an email or text when your result report is ready - typically a day or two after your visit.
ALT results are reported in U/L
    Low
This is not a concern for most people, but may suggest frailty in middle aged and elderly people, and may be relevant to monitoring advanced stages of liver disease.
    Normal
Monitoring your ALT levels for changes over time can help detect damage to your liver.
    High
This may suggest liver damage due to fatty liver disease or viral hepatitis. It may also be caused by alcohol consumption or certain medications and supplements. Liver disease can progress from inflammation (hepatitis) to hardening (fibrosis) to scarring (cirrhosis), and ultimately liver failure if untreated. It is important to discuss this result with your clinician.
