Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is a hormone produced by your pituitary gland. It tells your thyroid gland to make hormones to control your metabolism, weight, body temperature, and muscle strength. This test measures the amount of TSH in your blood to see if your thyroid is making the right amount of hormones.
It can tell if you have hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone).
The American Thyroid Association1 recommends measuring thyroid function in all adults beginning at age 35 and every five years thereafter.
Your doctor can help you decide what's right for you.
This test is also known as: thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroid function or thyrotropin.
